The Spirit of Anger

Anger definition - strong, intense feeling of displeasure, hostility from a real or imagined threat, insult, injustice or frustration to you

No matter where you live, you fill find a lot of angry people, mad at what happened yesterday, mad at the news and just bitter about things from years ago.

The first time in the bible on the earth, the destruction of anger can be found in Genesis 4:1-5  (let's read the story about Cain and Abel each bringing God a sacrifice)

The Lord respected and accepted Abel in his offering and rejected Cain's, why?

- Abel was a shepherd and brought a lamb (blood sacrifice)
- Cain was a farmer and brought the works of his hands (bloodless sacrifice)
- We know that God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7); there was something in Cain's motivation and heart that made his offering unacceptable.

God rejecting Cain's offering made Cain very angry.

Genesis 4:5-8 (NIV)

So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the Lord said to Cain,

Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."

Now Cain said to his brother, "Let's go out to the field" While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Why did Cain kill Abel?

It wasn't because of the offerings, it was because he couldn't control his anger. Anger stood at his door and God warned him when he said sins at his door and he'd better rule over it. Judgement came on Cain and for this one act of uncontrolled anger, that he wasn't able to get a handle on, it ruined his life forever.

Think of how many people today are sitting in a federal prison, day after day, month after month, year after year until the day they die because of ONE UNCONTROLLED ACT OF ANGER from years ago.

Why do you think "You shall not murder" is one of the 10 Commandments?  (Exodus 20:13) NIV

God gave us specific emotions to help us intuitively, instinctively and to immediately recognize danger, injustice and evil intentions; which is built in us a "fight" or "flight" mechanism gifted to us for our human survival.

James 1:19-20 (NIV) - Listening and Doing

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

The Bible teaches that anger is the frontman for everything the devil does on the earth. If he can bring anger through the door first, every other thing will follow. The fruit of anger is destruction.

How would you like to invite every evil thing into your house, your life, your mind and your heart through the door called Anger?

What is the root of anger? Where does it come from?

In the book of Revelation, it reveals to us what's going on in the earth, the end of ages, what's behind anger and that it comes from one place.

Chapter 12 mentions there is two powers on this earth. 1) the goodness of God 2) evil done to others by Satan who was casted down into the earth.

Remember the angel, Lucifer, meaning "day star" or shining one" or "morning star" wanted to supersede the throne of God, so he was casted down to the earth and brought one-third of God's original angels with him.

Isaiah 14:12-14 (Let's read)

Revelation 12:7-9 (Let's read)

Revelation 12: 3-4 (Let's read)

In Revelation chapter 12, the woman in that verse is Israel and the Dragon is the devil.

Revelation 12:12 says, "...because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short."

Our enemy, the devil is full of anger, rage and fury. Everything the enemy does, he does out of anger. He is the father of anger.

Everything our Heavenly Father does is out of compassion.

John 3:16 -17(NIV)

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Therefore Christ followers, we need to be battle ready and put on the full Armor of God - Ephesians 6:10-18

as Satan will make war with. Revelation 12:7 (Let's read)

Justified anger: purposeful and beneficial to someone who is being mistreated, hurt or taken advantage of

Unjustified anger: Self-motivated and vengeful, seeks to get even or destroy, no benefit to any person, although the angry person may think he is reaping a temporary victory

Can anger be good? Yes, if it's righteous and produces lasting positive results. Can you think of a time where you had experience justified or unjustified anger?

Good anger is disciplined and doesn't rage like a wild fire

Good anger focuses on a resolution

Good anger is short-lived, ends when results have been achieved and aimed at Godly goals

Ephesians 4:26-27 (NIV)

In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

James 3:5-11-12 (NIV) Taming the Tongue

Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course on one's life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed by mankind, but no human can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

James 3:5-13-18 (NIV) Two Kinds of Wisdom

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and every evil practice.

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

When was the last time you got angry?

There is nothing wrong with feeling anger over some of the stuff going on in this world. The problem is not feeling angry, the problem is the action, the response. I've learned when I feel anger inside of me, it is not the Holy Spirit of God. There is no sense to justify it, even if what happened is evil,  you don't fight demons with demons, fire with fire. You fight demons with the spirit of God, so don't fight anger with evil but with the Holy Spirit of God.

James 3:5-17-18 (NIV)

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

Go to peace first! Start asking, "how is your heart today?"

Did you know that a lot of people that are angry today, you can trace it back to the abuse they experienced as a child. A scripture to help overcome this can be found in Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

So for times when we feel angry, we need to pray and give it to God because if we do not rule over anger, it will rule us like it did Cain. Commit to not letting the devil rule over your home. Control your anger by praying first.

How long do you think you can feel angry for?

Ephesians 4:26-27 (NIV)

In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

You deal with it today, get rid of it before the sun goes down, close the door on anger, keep the devil out.

Psalm 30:5

For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay  for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
